Chicago man wins Baikal ice sailing cup
(25 Mar 2017) The Baikal ice sailing week came to a close on Saturday at Russia's Lake Baikal - the deepest freshwater lake in the world.
The tournament brought together 79 sailors from Russia, the US, the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland and Sweden.
Competitors took part in two-kilometre races across the lake's frozen surface, with the overall winner declared at the end of the week.
The main prize, the Baikal Cup, ultimately went to Chris Berger from the US city of Chicago.
The Baikal contest is the last in the sport's season, as the 50-centimetre thick ice allows for ice yachting events in the spring, when surfaces have already melted in other parts of the world.
Last year, the sailing week was held in April, but organisers moved the dates forward by two weeks due to safety concerns.
